“In more than 120 years Bruckner’s Mass No. 3 in F Minor has had only one previous Prom performance. It fits this venue perfectly, not surprisingly given that Bruckner was composing his high-Victorian Mass just as the Royal Albert Hall was being planned. The devotional aura of the music was judged to a nicety in this performance by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Juanjo Mena. It seemed a lavish gesture to import a choir from Spain for the occasion, but Orfeón Pamplonés sang with a distinctively fine, soft-grained focus and a prestigious quartet of soloists — Luba Orgonášová, Jennifer Johnston, Robert Dean Smith and Derek Welton — had been assembled for what is a meagre assignment on their part.”
